Taking More Libertys

Taking More Liberty's celebrated the creativity and exuberance of London streets with a unique photographic interactive situated in the Carnaby Street windows of Liberty between 5 - 26th October 2009. The project was the sequel to the 2004 project Taking Liberty's; this time engineered especially to dovetail with SHOWstudio: Fashion Revolution at Somerset House. Passers-by posed in front of the camera and the images were uploaded live to be showcased as part of the exhibition and in the above gallery.

POPVOX - Abbey Road

A video installation created for SHOWstudio during Fashion Djs. A machine asks 5 questions and then edits and uploads the finished video to showstudio.com. Willing participants include Mike Figgis, Mick Jones, Boy George and Jourdan, amongst many others.

The Replenishing Body wins Honorary mention at Ars Electronica Grand Prix 2008

Replenishing Body has won an honorary mention in the interactive arts category at this years Ars Electronica Grand Prix. Started in 1987, Prix Ars Electronica is the foremost international prize for computer art so I am really pleased that the project has been recognised.

Brit Insurance Designs of the year

The Replenishing Body (see below) was shortlisted in the Interactive category in 2008's Designs of the year currently running at the Design Museum. The following is taken from the exhibition program.

"The Replenishing Body Kiosk was created by Ross
Phillips, head of interactive at SHOWstudio, the online
fashion broadcasting company, founded by Nick Knight.
For this project they partnered with Evian to devise
an exhibition at a London west-end gallery, allowing
visitors to become part of ‘The Replenishing Body’. The
interactive video installation, inspired by the fact that the
human body is made up of 60% water, used a 25 section,
touch screen video grid where visitors were invited
to make a one-second video recording of a close-up
section of their body, which was added to a constantly
moving, composite video portrait. Each recording was
then added on top of previous footage so that the video
grid became a continually transformed display thanks to
the visitor’s participation."

The Replenishing Body

An interactive video installation created in collaboration with Evian, The Replenishing Body consists of a grid of squares (5x5) which can each record a 1 second loop of film. Participants can create and orchestrate a giant composite moving creature, or simply a collage of moving snapshots by recording a close-up section of their body part. The grid starts empty at the beginning of the installation and becomes a constantly changing collorative artwork. Grids are periodically uploaded to a gallery which can be viewed on http://www.showstudio.com

TOKYO STYLE CLASH

TOKYO STYLE CLASH was a chance for Toyko’s most stylish to battle it out and find out if they were HOT or NOT? From the 14th until the 16th October, a roster of 9 photographers were set up in the front window of BEAMS' Harajuku store, waiting to take over 1,400 entrants portraits.

All of the photographs were then used to create an interactive game that was played over six weeks on SHOWstudio during October and November 2006. by a celebrity panel and the worldwide SHOWstudio audience, who collectively decided who really has the hottest look in Tokyo!!

BLOW, CLAP, TALK, HUM

Featuring an extensive selection of accessories from the A/W '06-7 collections, 'Blow, Clap, Talk & Hum' is a series of interactives that relies on specific noises created by the viewer. Possessing a particularly craft-based aesthetic, the playful interactives employ varying techniques that bring still-life images of carefully selected accessories –including shoes, bags, rings, hairpieces, necklaces and masks- to life. Each one of the four different interactives, encourages the viewer to make specific sounds –'blow', 'clap', 'talk' or 'hum'- into a microphone. These noises then activate a selection of accessories-themed 'stories' that take their form in a dress-up model, an animated crumpled paper sequence, a voice-activated selection of varyingly sized jewellery pieces and an animated shoe sequence, complete with 'footstep' audio.

ANECHOIC

Anechoic is a 'collections story' project that uses sound instead of visuals to interpret the essence of key garments the A/W '06-7 season by leading fashion brands. A live recording session in a specialist recording studio -a hemi-anechoic chamber- on 1 June 2006 was used to create a series of groundbreaking interactives that for the first time in fashion media, detail the precise sound of fashion materials such as feathers, sequins, glass crystals and beads, nylon, taffeta, leather, velvet, jacquard, zips and metallic chains.

VOICEBOX

Voice Box was a live audio installation created inside the SHOWstudio premises over the festive period by the SHOWstudio viewer base. Reliant upon audience participation for its success, the project asked viewers to make a voice or sound recording via telephone which was then ‘tied’ to the time it was submitted and repeated at that time each day from 23 December 2005—3 January 2006. This gradually produced a collaborative, time-based sound work. The project started as a ‘blank sheet’ on the Friday the SHOWstudio team broke for Christmas and built up as viewers’ voices started to fill the void of the repeating, one-day timeframe. The piece played simultaneously inside the empty studio and as well as being broadcast from the SHOWstudio website.

LYRIC

Twelve leading creatives from the fields of fashion, music and image-making have come together to produce eight distinct projects under the mantle of 'Lyric', an umbrella project that pioneers creative ground using the latest 'third generation' mobile-imaging technologies. Each contributor, or creative pairing was issued with a 'Motorola' handset with video call facility on '3's video mobile network, and asked to make a series of short films or 'motion clips' that visually interpret the song lyrics of their choice - producing one clip for each lyric line.

The contributors have produced a clip for each lyric line, and each lyric and clip is released one by one over a month-long period, gradually revealing the visual interpretations of each maker in numerous audacious, provocative outcomes On completion, each song sequence imparts a sense of the personality of the practitioners.

The concept was Nick Knight's but I was involved in the implementation of the videos as well as working with the artists in various capacities such as selection and editing.

PSP AMAZE ME

AMAZE ME is inspired by the brief issued by art director Alexi Brodovitch to photographer Richard Avedon — simply to “amaze him”.
The challenge asked you, the public, to respond to a brief set by a panel of six leading creative industry figures in six different territories. The interactive booths were installed in London, Antwerp, Rome, Dublin, Barcelona and Berlin. Entrants came to one of our micro-studio booths and made a 30 second video pitch. The best six entrants won a PSP™(Playstation®Portable), plus an exclusive opportunity to work with the panellist they attempted to amaze.

FRAGMENTS OF ME

Watch what happens when a model that is used to being directed takes control of her representation. Each day, Liberty Ross sends in three video clips of the three sections of her body that make up a full-length portrait, which will be fed into this random generator. Using the arrows, flick through the layers to discover the myriad of self-authored looks beneath and see what models get up to when there are no stylists, creative directors or photographers around to intervene!

MODELCARDS

An interactive casting booth that asked the questions that are normally written on a models card but in this case are filmed and uploaded automatically to SHOWstudio. After entering the booth and stating their name, the models are then asked questions about their agency, their physical appearance and then finally, where they are heading to next.

TAKING LIBERTY'S

An interactive camera/sensor was placed in the window of the Regent Street Liberty's store to capture the 'looks' of over 17,000 participants during the period from 14 February - 4 April 2004. All the images are posted on SHOWstudio, including Katy England's shortlist of 10 finalists and the ultimate winner.

RANDOM ACTS OF LOVE

A simple project for valentines day 2004. We asked our viewers to write a valentines message and submit it, along with their email address, into our database before the 14th. When the day came everyone who entered a message received a random message of love from someone else who took part.

PIRELLI CALENDAR

13 interactives using images from Nick Knights Pirelli calendar 2004. Each image was taken and manipulated in a way that allows the viewer to reveal the final image with simple and playful interaction.

ELEY KISHIMOTO

A sound reactive installation created for Eley Kishimoto's store in Southwark london. A monitor was mounted flush into a wall covered in their iconic 'flash' design wallpaper. As visitors to the shop make noises, the wallpaper seems to come alive as it reacts with one of 3 distinct interactive designs
